Assistant Professor of Theoretical Public Economics

Prof. Mateus Souza, Ph.D.

Mateus Souza joined the Department of Economics as an Assistant Professor in September 2023. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Mateus conducts research primarily on energy and environmental economics. He uses econometric tools and machine learning for causal inference, focusing on topics related to incentives for adoption of energy-efficient technologies, behavioral nudges for energy conservation, links between air pollution, health, and economic outcomes, among others.
